What will your life look like 30-years from now?
When you close your eyes and picture what your life looks like on that time horizon what do you see? What wisdom would your old self pass back to your younger self?
Companies use vision to articulate a desired outcome, to garner support and focus all resources on realizing that vision. The higher you are in your organization the larger role you have in creating this vision and aligning an organization to it. The closer you are to the front lines in an organization the more you are involved in the day-to-day operations. Many employees want to know where they are headed, what does the future of my job look like.
In a healthy organization there is a clear understanding of the long-term goal and each employee understands their part in realizing that goal.
For many executives, senior leaders, managers the vision, goals and targets within the organization become their vision.
It Can Take Over
People can lose self as they adopt their role and create a better future for the benefit of others.
This Is Great For Companies
When an organization gets talented leaders that really deliver everyone who touches their products and company stock benefits from this.
What about your personal life? Have you taken responsibility as CEO of You.com? Have you taken any time to create your vision of what your life will look like in 5-years? Start small, and work your way up to a 30 year vision. If you are young a 5-year timeline may seem hard enough to imagine, let alone 30. With time and practice you will see that the last 5-year vision you developed is around you now. It may not be exactly what you had pictured but large portions of the goals you had were realized. You may have even ended up in a life better than what you had asked for.
If you take a little time to imagine yourself in 30 years and you see something you don’t like is there anything you can do now to change that outcome?
The Answer Is Yes, Through Your Vision
Small adjustments in your course today can make broad changes in your reality 30 years from now. It all begins with your ability to see your future self with clarity.
The habits that you have today are creating your future. Making change in your habits is easier when you can picture and target a desired outcome. The more real you make the goal, the long-term vision the more likely you are to make choices today that will bring that reality.
Don’t’ spend too much time out there in the future, the purpose of this exercise is for you to get a strong mental image of what you want your future to look like. You are establishing a goal out on the horizon that you can look up to when you aren’t sure about a decision you need to make today.
We also don’t recommend spending a lot of time in the past, analyzing decisions made and situations gone. What you need from your past is the lessons learned, the experience that is forming who you are today. These lessons and this experience are your life’s work that build on one another and carry you to that best personal version of you that the world needed.
Carry lessons and experience, create the mental image of where you want to be and get deeply rooted through your own feet in what you are doing today. When you are faced with a difficult decision, look up at your vision and ask, will this help me get there? It helps a great deal to tell someone your vision. At a minimum write it down for yourself or create a vision board if that speaks to your soul. We will spend more time on the specifics of these in future posts
