In the journey of life, we often find ourselves caught in a tug of war between what we want to do and what we feel we should do. Balancing our own desires and priorities while also considering the needs of others can be a challenging task. While prioritizing others is a commendable trait, neglecting self-care can lead to burnout and a sense of dissatisfaction. In this blog post, we’ll explore the importance of finding balance, setting boundaries, and embracing self-care to navigate this delicate tug of war.
Understanding the Internal Conflict:
The conflict between self-desires and prioritizing others is an inherent part of human nature. As social beings, we have an innate inclination to care for and support those around us. However, it’s essential to recognize that prioritizing others shouldn’t come at the expense of our own well-being and happiness.
1. Embrace Self-Awareness:
Start by cultivating self-awareness to recognize when you’re neglecting your own needs. Pay attention to your emotions and feelings. Are you constantly putting others first, even when it leaves you feeling drained and unfulfilled? Acknowledging this internal conflict is the first step towards finding a balance that works for you.
2. Set Clear Boundaries:
Establishing boundaries is crucial for maintaining balance in your life. It’s okay to say no when you need time for self-care or when taking on additional responsibilities becomes overwhelming. Boundaries empower you to protect your time, energy, and well-being without feeling guilty.
3. Practice Self-Compassion:
Remember that it’s okay to prioritize yourself. Practicing self-compassion allows you to accept that you can’t always be everything for everyone. Be gentle with yourself and recognize that taking care of your needs is essential for being able to support others effectively.
4. Communicate Openly:
If you find yourself torn between your desires and others’ expectations, open communication is key. Express your feelings and needs to those around you. Often, loved ones will understand and support your quest for balance.
5. Embrace Self-Care:
Nurturing yourself through self-care activities is vital for your well-being. Whether it’s dedicating time to hobbies, meditation, exercise, or simply taking a quiet moment for yourself, self-care replenishes your energy and helps you be more present for others.
Tug Of War
The tug of war between what we want to do and what we feel we should do is a constant balancing act. Prioritizing others is an admirable quality, but it should not come at the expense of our own happiness and self-care. Embrace self-awareness, set boundaries, communicate openly, and practice self-compassion to find the equilibrium that honors both your desires and your responsibility to others. Remember, by taking care of yourself, you become better equipped to support and uplift those around you.

I feel that obligations come under this heading too. There are times when obligation steps in between what you would like to do and what you need to do for yourself. It’s harder to think of self when you know someone has not been included or has needs that you feel you cannot meet at a particular time. It could be called an ‘expectation’ but sometimes there are things we must do regardless of wanting to do them.
I gained a lot from this post, thank you.
