When everything seems to be going wrong many of us have the habit of holding on, a sudden intense focus on the perceived problem, and taking action to fix this problem.
This could look like a new boss in your career which suddenly shifts the environment around you, and you are no longer on the strong career trajectory you thought you were on. In these situations, many people increase effort in their tasks at work, focus on doing a better job to make a good impression on the new boss. Some individuals increase the hours the spend at work and even begin to skip coffee and meal breaks to get more work done.
Many of these individuals burn out and unintentionally contribute to the end of their job.
This could also look like a sudden change in living circumstances. Your dependable roommate suddenly announces their decision to travel the world which results in your living expenses doubling. Or your spouse changes the locks while you are away and leaves you without your possessions, without access to your kids and homeless. In these situations, people may focus on repairing the relationship, doing more for the other party involved in hopes of maintaining the status quo.
Many of these individuals struggle to recover from the financial impact of these sudden changes.
What if a person were to let go? When things in your life start to ‘go bad’ what if the action you take is to let go and watch the tide shift. Instead of fighting the tide and attempting to reach shore again, what would happen if you stay in calm water and observe the unravelling of events before you?
I stand strong in my position that when a problem arises in your work or home life the act of focusing and fixing only increases the magnitude of the problem. When we focus, we give energy to that which we focus on.
If you have a large problem in your life the last thing you want to do is contribute MORE energy to that problem.
Our best action is counterintuitive. Let go. Search your environment for positive signs of the situations and experiences you want to create in your life. Look forward to the horizon to see if the goals you set years ago still fit for the person you have become today. Do those goals still fit for your values?
Look up and head to the lighthouse that draws you to the things you want most in life.
When you do this the problems become smaller and you may see that these unexpected events occurring around you may help you take the steps required to move you closer to your goals in life.
You may have forgotten about that vision you were working toward, but your environment still holds the path to that which you asked for.
Focus intently when things are going very well in life. Refresh your vision and immerse in the good feelings when things are going your way.
Do not focus on problems. Let go, look up to that which you want to feel and experience and watch for signs of the path that will bring you there.
